A child bank account or pocket money app with a debit card can give kids added freedom, while allowing adults to keep some control.

We’ve got a range of banking options to help kids and teenagers aged 6-17 spend, save, budget and learn. So, here’s a quick rundown of debit cards, and how a kids bank account with a card usually works:

Adapt bank account and debit card

Good for: more financial independence and letting their money grow.

  • 2.05% AER, 2.03% Gross p.a. (variable) interest on your balance. Interest is calculated daily and paid monthly. 
  • No fees or overdraft so you don't have to worry about debt.
  • Tap to pay with contactless, Google or Apple Pay.

What does a child need to apply for our kids bank cards?

Adapt current account and kids debit card

  • Kids aged 11-15 will need their parents or guardians to help with their application, who will also need to be an existing NatWest customer.
  • Teenagers aged 16-17 can apply for an Adapt current account and free kids bank card independently.
  • In both cases, we’ll need to see proof of ID before we can open the account.

Rooster Money prepaid debit card

Kids will need the support of their parents or guardians to apply for a NatWest Rooster Money account and prepaid debit card.

You’ll need to:

  • sign up and download the Rooster Card app
  • add your kids
  • connect your account
  • claim your Rooster subscription.

NatWest customers can claim up to three cards free of charge. Subscription normally £1.99 per month or £19.99 per year.
